The Medicine Hat is an experimental pop band from Hamilton, Ontario. In June, they began releasing singles from their upcoming self-titled LP, which has built a lot of anticipation. “St. Cecilia,” their latest single, demonstrates the band’s knack for crafting beautiful, heart-wrenching pop gems that shimmer and glow with urgency and ambition.
The song is sonically gorgeous, at once sparse before leaping into deeply textured guitar/synth soundscapes for the revelatory chorus. Nabi Sue Bersche’s vocals fit the music perfectly, being strong and vulnerable at the same time. That’s what the band is all about.
“St. Cecilia” doesn’t overstay its welcome, but it’s a song to listen to over and over again. It’s a truly emotional pop single from a band that is quickly finding itself among the most compelling new artists in the country.
