New Jersey band Fond Han have a truly schizophrenic sound, aiming for terror and beauty in equal measures. Their prettiest moments are often only a few seconds away from their most horrific outbursts, which makes for some thoroughly unpredictable music. On their new album, Sham Cloud, they channel the skewed pop sensibilities of Mercury Rev’s early work while paying homage to the bad-acid-trip sounds of The Butthole Surfers. Add in some indie rock attitude, a flirtation with post-rock and jazz, and a soft spot for black metal noise, and you’ll begin to have some idea of what Sham Cloud is all about. It’s one of the most unique records to emerge this year, and it will surely frighten, surprise and impress anyone who really listens.
